About Italian for Cooks

Italian for Cooks provides information on Italian language and culture related to eating and cooking for English speakers. It is intended for professional cooks, home cooks, food journalists, writers, eaters and anyone else with an interest in Italian food and language. As it relates to food, the Italian language is particularly interesting and diverse. Ingredients, techniques and terminology vary greatly from one region to another and even from town to town. There is not one way to butcher a cow, but dozens of ways, resulting in different cuts of meat and hence, different nomenclature and preparations. Translating an Italian recipe (or menu) usually requires more than a simple translation of ingredient names and quantities. Our glossary is an ongoing project.
